The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre (619 South Main Street, Gainesville, Florida)
announces the winner of its annual James Sunwall New Play Contest. From hundreds
of entries, the ART's judges picked When You Have No Class,
described by New Jersey playwright William Griggs as "a farce in two acts."
Reader's-theatre performances of the play will be given on Sunday, October
16 and Monday, October 17, with an 8 PM curtain at the theatre.
When You Have No Class is a hilarious and yet strangely profound look at the insane life of public school teachers; its humor is both loving and sarcastic. The cast of characters includes a hypochondriac named Sidney whose Viagra is mistakenly taken by one of the female teachers, a divorced couple stuck together at the same school, a principal who has lost his mind to official forms, and other funny souls lost in a wild, unpredictable world that will have a special meaning for this area's teachers. Directed by Allison Kirkpatrick, whom audiences will remember from the ART's production of The Threepenny Opera, When You Have No Class features six of the community's favorite actors.
Tickets, sold at the door the night of the performance, are just $7 for students and $9 for the general public. For more information, please call 352-378-9166.
The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre (619 South Main Street, Gainesville) announces the opening of one of the most exciting plays it has ever staged, described by The Guardian as "like a shot of caffeine straight in the veins," when Stephen Adly Guirgis's JESUS HOPPED THE 'A' TRAIN opens on Thursday, October 27, and plays Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (with an 8 PM curtain) through November 19.
About the prison system, born-again Christians, murder, and a startling change in character, JESUS HOPPED THE 'A' TRAIN is directed by Kevin Mack, who comes to Gainesville from Philadelphia's renowned Freedom Theatre. The play will surely stir controversy about matters of faith, criminal justice, and the divisions in American society. Who is deserving of redemption? Mack has assembled a brilliant cast for the production.
Tickets are just $7 for students and $9 for the general public, and may be purchased ahead of time at Omni Books (in the Westgate Shopping Center) or Book Gallery West (in the Millhopper Shopping Center) or at the door the night of performances. For more information please call 352-378-9166.

Directed by Sidney Homan and L'Tanya Van Hamersveld, it was restaged this year after its initial run two seasons ago, and has been the recipient of various state grants.
