2016 | 01 Hometown Knights – WORLD PREMIERE

The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce its world premiere production of Hometown Knights by Chuck Lipsig, directed by Jessica Arnold and Chuck Lipsig, opening Friday, January 15, at 8:00 PM and running Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM through January 31.

Hometown Knights is a comedic new twist on Aristophanes’ classic, The Knights. Two assistants, sick and tired of their boss taking credit for their work, find someone to challenge him. But will it work out as they hope? And what’s with all the hot dogs?!

Hometown Knights was a 2014 one-act entry in the Acrosstown’s Gainesville Homegrown Local Playwrights’ Festival. It was so well received that the director requested it be adapted into a full-length play.

According to the play’s author, Chuck Lipsig, “Aristophanes wrote Knights to parody the politicians of his day; a friend of mine wondered how it might work with current-day politicians. However, it occurred to me at the time (and has only been emphasized since) that current politicians don’t need my help to generate comedy. So, while its roots are in Aristophanes’ classic, I’ve made the effort to make Hometown Knights neither Republican nor Democratic, neither liberal or conservative.  It’s a farce on politics in general, not any particular person or group– but don’t be surprised if the people and situations reflect things you’ve seen (or are seeing) in politics today.”

The play takes place in Fainburg, a small town of several thousand people. Long-time mayor Halfgallon has two obsessions: retaining his office and keeping the record for selling the most hot dogs at high school events. He also has an ego quite larger than the town itself. His two aides, Frankie & Nicky, have become frustrated at doing all the work to make the mayor look good, and receiving none of the credit. Their solution? Find someone to challenge the current mayor. But have they bitten off more than they can chew?

Hometown Knights runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm from Friday, January 15 through Sunday, January 31 at The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre, in the Baird Center at 619 South Main Street in Gainesville. There will be a $5 preview performance on Thursday, January 14 (cash-only at the door).
