2015|05 R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) – AUDITIONS

Auditions will be held at the theater Sunday, May 3, Sunday, May 17, and Monday, May 18, at 7:00pm. Expect cold readings from a provided script; dress comfortably and be prepared to move. Production dates are in July and early August.

Although auditions, by their very nature, require that performances and their suitability to any individual role be judged, we won’t judge YOU (except maybe to tell you how awesome you are). You’ll find that the people here are very warm and welcoming, and happy to read with you, whether it’s your first time on stage or your thousandth.

The Acrosstown is entirely volunteer-run and -operated, and all levels of experience are welcomed. Backstage help is needed, too– please phone the theater at 352-234-6278 (352-BE IN ART) if you would like to get involved!

If cast you will be compensated by the roar of applause and the joy of being part of the Acrosstown family 🙂

You may think the word “robot” has been around forever, but the word was, in fact, coined during this play in 1921. The world has never been the same.

“Robot” comes from the Czech, from robota  meaning “forced labor.” That we now attribute this word to automatons is telling, and drives the play’s plot to its inevitable conclusion. The influence R.U.R. has had on pop culture is too massive to describe. However, if you look closely, you can find references to it in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Doctor Who, Batman: The Animated Series and The Outer Limits, to name but a few.

We’ll be doing this show a bit differently than written, setting our play in the future rather than the past.
